Proper maintenance and inspection of forklifts in today’s modern industry is essential to the expeditious; safe; and proper handling of materials.

Any forklift is considered a complex machine, requiring specialized skills in order to detect problems and verify proper operation of the lift and all attachments. Knowledge and understanding of the dynamic forces involved with lifting even light loads must be applied by the competent person conducting the inspection.

Mechanical failures do occur; the intent of inspection is to assess equipment condition, and report to the equipment owner. The overall idea is to prevent accidents; injury; and damaged goods or equipment; not to mention the resulting costs.

In order to be qualified, employers should insist that inspectors undergo initial and recurrent training in the inspection procedures applicable to the type of equipment involved. This training should include the successful completion of both written and practical examinations. CICB’s Forklift Inspector Course is a one-day program and is recommended for anybody that is conducting frequent or periodic inspections.
